What is an SMD file and how do I get one?

An SMD (Signed Mark Data) file is a document that shows us that you have a verified registered trademark and are eligible to pre-register a domain name with your registered mark.

Why do I need an SMD file?

Trademark Holder pre-registration gives you an opportunity to register domain names corresponding to your registered mark, before they are generally available to the public. To prove you own the trademark, you'll upload an SMD (Signed Mark Data) file when you submit your Trademark Holder pre-registration application. 

For example, if you have a registered trademark or property rights for Cool Example, you can submit a Trademark Holder application for coolexample.___ (an exact match ONLY). The SMD file will confirm the mark belongs to you, and you'll be awarded the domain name.

How do I get an SMD file?

To get an SMD file, you'll need to submit an application through The Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). We do not support the trademark registration process, so please visit The Trademark Clearinghouse's FAQ and Help pages for answers to your questions.

Note: Make sure your SMD file starts from Marks: and ends at END ENCODED SMD– – – – –.

If you enter incorrect information on your Trademark Clearinghouse application, it will fail and you will not receive a refund from The Trademark Clearing House. Please double-check your applications for accuracy before you submit them.
