What do the different IIS settings do?
These are the different IIS Settings you can apply to the directories in your Windows hosting account using the Hosting Control Panel:
- Anonymous Access
- This enables an anonymous user to view files in a directory through a Web browser using HTTP. This option is enabled by default and constitutes "normal" browsing. Disabling it requires visitors to enter a password to view your site.
- Directory Browsing
- This enables an anonymous user to view all files in directories without index files by pointing a Web browser to the directory path. "Anonymous Access" must be enabled for "Directory Browsing" to work properly.
- Set Application Root
- This enables you to set the directory or subdirectory as an IIS application root within your site. All directories and files contained within the application root are considered part of the application.
For information on limiting Web directory access, see Remove web access to directories.
